June 2010

WELCOME BACK to your island paradise for all you Snowbirds who had flown south in your RV’s for the winter to escape ‘a typical Canadian winter’ – which it was not.  Now is the time for either putting your Newmar up for a rest, or for those who stayed home and wintered on this island paradise, time to start cleaning, and preparing for that possible first ‘cruise’ for the year.

Over the winter, many RV’rs came to this island as their ‘snowbird’ destination and were delighted to have such a mild winter, but now they too are headed back to their domiciles and everyone is getting ready to complete, or, if not already completed, that dreaded “T” word – Taxes.  It brings all those ‘snowbirds’ back home; a little bit of business before more pleasure.

Now that spring has officially arrived, the April flowers have blossomed, and the tax rebate is on its’ way, plans can now be made for the ‘cruising’ season in your Newmar RV.  Time to get reacquainted with friends and family and other Newmar owners as the year of rallies unfolds before you.

As some of you know, this year the BC Dogwood – Islanders Klub is co-hosting its Chapter rally with the Region 9 rally, making it a joint event, and we are quite excited about it – an event to mark with a big “X” on your calendars – September 16 – 19th, 2010.  This is the 6th Annual Rally for the Islanders since they were formed, and all have been extremely well done, with dedicated volunteers, and with lots of happy memories of those times.  So add one more additional happy, memorable fun event to your schedule of travels and come over to our island paradise and receive a good ol’ island welcome and a laid back fun rally, and we look forward to seeing you there.

Cheers,

March 2010

So February is now history, March is coming around the corner, and a new BC RV season is under way. The trade shows are doing their planning for the upcoming RV season, and the Newmar dealers are proudly ordering, displaying, and presenting their various lines of Newmar RV vehicles for those RV’rs who are comparing, justifying, taking notes, or just plain enjoying the visits to view the latest and greatest in Newmar RV’s.

This is the season to ‘kick the tires and slam the doors’ as all RV’rs consider updating, trading in or just getting new ideas and looking at all the ‘must have’ items for their RV homes on wheels, the pride of their traveling companion.  What better place to use your Newmar than on Vancouver Island, which has some spectacular scenery, great RV resorts, backroads meandering along the shores of the ocean, and lots of places to stop and explore the local villages, towns and cities.  Step back into yesteryear as life slows down and you relax traveling through this Pacific Island paradise. – Sounds like an advertisement doesn’t it, but as a relatively new ‘islander’ I can attest that all the above is true, and more.

Some of you reading this on-line are still enjoying the winter ‘Snowbird’ experience amongst other RV’rs with similar interests.  Winter is a time to get rejuvenated down south, but soon you’ll be heading north to once again smell the flowers, feel the softness of grass beneath bare feet, and the fresh scent of an ocean breeze.  Already the flower count in underway and their fragrance is drifting south to entice you away from those winter playgrounds as spring is a wonderful time to experience in your Newmar RV; that’s where all those future dreams start.

Don’t forget that wonderful opportunity to visit us on the Island this year, and get double enjoyment by joining us for our 6th Annual BC Dogwood – Islanders Klub Chapter Rally, which is really special this year as we are co-hosting it with the Region 9 Rally, so a joint fun event for everyone. Mark your calendar now – September 16th – 19th, 2010 and dream your way through all the wonderful times that can be had on Vancouver Island, that we BC Dogwood – Islanders are already aware of, and we love to share the joy, so we are inviting you over here with your Newmar to take a part of your new holidays for 2010, a unique and beautiful place to RV, and live.

Keep those wheels turning, and may the roads lead you down a memory lane to lasting colourful sunsets, and every trip you take, a wonderful experience.

Cheers,

February 2010

Daffodils are Mother Natures’ Spring “Walmart Greeters”, saying welcome to another year and that winter is supposedly ‘officially’ behind us, and we can start planning all those events, chores and ‘to do lists’.  But wait a second, this is only February, and the ‘Snowbird’ season is still in full swing.  Potluck lunches, golf dates, swim-aerobics in an outdoor pool, shopping, ice creams, etc., are still the order of the day, so lets not get carried away with all these ‘to do lists’, that will have to wait its’ turn for the time when you pull up stakes and start heading north along with the other Snowbirds.

This past winter more and more RV’rs from the prairies, head to the balmy climate of Vancouver Island, the Hawaii of Canada.   They have discovered the joys of this Pacific Island Paradise during the winter.  They also call themselves ‘Snowbirds’, and rightly so as some of the climates during this past winter on the prairies have been downright ‘wintry’, and to these ‘Snowbirds’ coming to spend the winter on Vancouver Island is like a journey from winter to spring all year.

However, there are also Islander ‘Springbirds’ that stayed home on their ‘nests’, during this past winter, and are getting a head start on their ‘to do’ lists.  Winter holds special memories for each of us. Now we can tuck them into the back of our consciousness while we look out into the garden and think of the planning of the vegetable plantings just a few months away, the flowers to plant, and the various other ‘home’ activities.  Some of us long for those times, and looking out over the daffodils the sight instills even more thoughts of spring, de-winterizing our Newmar coaches, sorting through the traveling clothes perhaps for a short jaunt to a favourite spring campout with friends, or just a get-a-way.  RV camping is a year round event on Vancouver Island.

Whatever you choose, you know that other members of the BC Dogwood-Islanders will be having similar thoughts and plans.  Whether you are at home or away for the winter, spring is always a wonderful time for renewing thoughts to the coming seasons, and one thought we want to stay in the forefront of your memory is the upcoming BC Dogwood-Islanders Klub Chapter Rally this coming September on Vancouver Island, a fun event.

We hope your travels and times are happy ones, and that the miles beneath your wheels are filled with pleasant thoughts of the spring that’s about to enter our worlds.

Safe travels,

Anne and Graham Caines (14591-L)

December 2009

Hello to all fellow Newmar BC Dogwood – Islanders Klub members,

By now all current paid Newmar Kountry Klub members and paid Islanders members should have received your new Konnection magazine.  You are responsible for keeping your annual Kountry Klub dues current as well as your Chapter memberships. However, the additional $15.00 USD needed to issue you the Konnection has been paid for by your executive on your behalf, from the Islanders Chapter funds. So we hope you enjoy it and continue to do so for the remainder of 2009.

My it has been a busy season, spring came a little late, and along with that was everyone’s “To Do List”,  which sometimes turns out to be a “Honey Do List”, among which is to get together and put on our Islanders Rally for 2009.  We are a little behind the ball this year, but nevertheless, we are still motoring along with our plans for our Islander Rally 2009.  To date, we have set up the place and the date, so here they are for your calendars:

Place: Ian Vantreights Farm in Saanichton

Dates: September 17th – September 20th

Note:  The site is dry camping only, but that should not present any problem as Newmar coaches are built to be self contained.

Details for the event are still being worked out, but you can be assured that a very enjoyable Islander welcome and rally will be had by all attendees.

We will be following up with more information and pricing to you, as development takes place.

If you are interested in attending, and we’d love to see you, or have any questions, please contact Bob and Sandy Smith (Islanders Secretary/Treasurers) either by:  E-mail at: bosansmith@aol.com,  or

Phone at: 250-468-7229 and leave a message, if necessary and we will get back to you at our first possible time.

It should be noted this year, that all friends with a Newmar coach are most welcome to our rally, whether or not you are a current member.  We encourage all members to pass on this information to your fellow RV’rs and ask them if they would like to join us for this years’ Islanders Rally.  If they enjoy themselves and like the camaraderie and advantages of joining our Klub, perhaps they would like to become future members of our Newmar family.  On the same note, it should also be noted that a non-Newmar RV is also very welcome for a one time attendance to our rallies.

In this E-mail we have attached for your information, the brochures for the Lower Mainland Chapter and Interior Chapter/Provincial Rallies.  If you would like to attend these, there is contact information contained within those brochures.

That’s all for now, and we look forward to hearing from you,

Cheers,

Anne and Graham

November 2009

Autumn passes into winter, the winds blow colder and a lot more frequent, as we bundle around a nice cozy fireplace and ponder over the upcoming season, the shorter days and longer nights.  Time has a way of increasing our alertness to the passing seasons as we venture forth into yonder years, making us aware of the trips yet to make, the friends to visit, the ‘honey do’ lists that keep piling up because of the ‘but first’ syndrome as a way of putting off these items.  Then one morning during a revelation, we realize that the important things in life are with us now and so we make that decision of whether to go south or stay at home this winter.  So with packages under our arms, suntan lotion safely packed away in the motorhome, the winter wood for the fireplace safely loaded in the wood shed, - whatever decision we made, we head into that season, prepared for another wonderful year of ‘snowbirding’ or projects to be done indoors at home.

One of the projects upcoming in 2010 is the next BC Dogwood-Islanders Klub Chapter Rally which has been scheduled to be held September 16th to September 19, 2010 – there’s no time like the present to get out that 2010 calendar and circle those dates right now.  You know the Islanders have great rallies and you don’t want to miss this one.

Well, we hope your decisions for the season are now in place and we know that whatever it is, you’ll have a great season filled with new memories, new friends and acquaintances, and we wish you safe travels wherever the roads winds.

Cheers,

October 2009

His eyes opened, and he looked around from where he was laying.  His mind had trouble focusing on what his eyes were observing.  Could it be really true, or was this just another of his recent dreams?  His head ached as if long hours of concentration had caused it, and he slowly rubbed his temples, trying to clear the thoughts racing through his now awakening mind. Tired though he was, he sat up, and it all came flooding back to him, recreating the moment in time that led to this butterfly feeling in the pit of his stomach.  Yes, he had done it, it wasn’t a dream. Now with renewed energy, he stood up and again, looked around, this time taking it all in as if for the first time.  Yes, he had indeed purchased a Newmar Motor Home, and last night was the first night aboard since taking delivery of it, and the celebrating had gone on for hours.  Now his mind was clear, and laughing to himself, he acknowledged that this must be the same experience other Newmar owners had felt when they had made that important decision.  He realized that he was now a part of a large social family, and his future traveling was what this moment has fostered for years.

New members of the Newmar family are always overcome by the friendliness and camaraderie of fellow Klub members, the service and support of the Newmar dealer network throughout North America, and particularly in Canada.  One of the best ways to jump headfirst into this social world is to take part in one of the Vancouver Island BC Dogwood-Islanders Annual Rallies, where nobody is a stranger, or as once quoted “A stranger is a friend that we haven’t been introduced to yet”.  It is so true that the Newmar extended family has spawned many a personal bond of friendship with other members.  So once again, our extended family has organized another fabulous BC Dogwood-Islanders Rally with all the hard work and dedication to make this another success, we wish to extend special kudos to Lynne and Ian Vantreight and Gary and Mary-Ann Tennent.  So stay tuned for next month’s Konnection to review the rally and the status of the executive to lead our Klub into 2010.

August 2009

Once again, the ‘pen strikes paper’, the mind pauses in reflection, muses over what would be interesting, and another article for the Newmar Konnection is born.

Is it true that ignorance is bliss, or that “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”?  Curiouser, and curiouser, the noise under the floor seems to be getting louder, and there seems to be a wild animal starting to growl towards the back of the coach.  These alarming sounds could be the beginning signals that certain ‘maintenance’ had not been done or remembered to be done.  Motor homes are complex, some people say living organisms that like to be pampered, and cared for.  However all too often we forget the heavy duty work that the transmission and rear end do to enable us to complete our ‘snowbird’ trips safely and comfortably each and every year. Yes, that’s right safety and comfort are two key words here.  The question arises in our mind, “When was the last time I had the transmission ‘flushed’ – not just drained and refilled, but ‘cleaned’ out including the all important torque converter.  How about the rear end, - no we’re not talking about that part of our anatomy that changes shape the more miles and years we put on it, but the part of the rear axle assembly that also needs attention and fluid changes periodically.

These two items are necessary so as to not to forget they exist, except when they decide ‘enough is enough’. Nobody wants to find that out when you’re in the middle of Nevada or Utah, or on a freeway in California.  So, the bottom line is maintenance, and should include these two items, least we forget.

On the other side of the coin (Canadian, that is), lies the BC Dogwood – Islanders Klub Rally for 2009.  Please mark your calendars with the following dates – September 17th, to September 20th, and stay tuned for details coming up in subsequent issues and personal e-mails to all Islander members.  We want to see you there for a grand time and a new place to store more upcoming favourite memories of your Newmar - BC Dogwood- Islanders Klub.

Until next time, keep the rubber side down and may the highways and byways be your travelling friends,

Anne and Graham Caines

July 2009

What a time in the history of the world we live in.  It’s absolutely amazing the things that we take for granted today were not available or even invented a relatively short time ago. - Short time can be an intangible time to people of different ages – hence summer went on forever when we were children and boredom came within two weeks of the start of summer holidays.  Yet as we ‘mature’, time has a way of speeding up so that no sooner we think about what’s coming up this summer, all of a sudden it’s upon us.  A certain wise fellow once said “The dates on the calendar are closer than they appear”!! – So true.

And so, the technology of today is just a precursor to what tomorrow holds in store for all of us.  Take our Newmar RV’s for example.  Each year, new ‘must have’ items are added to the inventory, which, a short time ago were dreams of the future.  One such ‘must have’ item is the GPS, the talking route planner, ready to take you to your destination, error free, well almost, anyway.  No matter where you go, what turns you take, the affectionately named GPS (_________ - insert your own name for him/her/it) will deduce that you really didn’t want to turn there and will tell you in no uncertain terms that to get back on to the correct route you have to  “ - - - - - - - - ” !! It almost makes those old BCAA strip maps obsolete (we always carry a regular map for every state and province as I’m from the old school and who knows, one day I may have to use it again – if I can remember where I stored them in the coach.

Now this GPS technology has again been transformed and included into certain cell phones, becoming more popular each month.  Oh and by the way, these cell phones can also place telephone calls as well!!  Not only can they do the same functions as the GPS standalone unit, it can also locate your friends as they buzz about their business, the state of your investments, or if you can’t remember where you left your Newmar RV in the desert when you return late at night, it can plot it’s position on your cell phone. Amazing, isn’t it.

What will the Newmar of the future hold in store for us – just let your imagination soar, and who knows, that device/feature may someday be a standard offering.  Newmar have people who research into and explore what potential customers are looking for as a ‘necessity’ for their coaches.  Right now though, the future of your Newmar Islander’s Klub is putting on another fantastic Islanders Rally for 2009.  Your Vice-President, Gary Tennent, and fellow member Ian Vantreight are co-hosting your Rally and doing a great job in the planning for your enjoyment and entertainment in our upcoming Rally.  Please mark the dates on your calendar, September 17th – 20th, and come out and support your Islanders Klub, the only Canadian Klub located on an island paradise in the Pacific.

That’s all for now, so keep those dreams alive and those wheels heading where your heart wishes to go, until next time,

Cheers,

Medical Travel Insurance.  Almost every one has it when they ‘snowbird’ south for the winter season.  Almost everyone cringes when they see the costs.  Almost every one shudders for the time they reach 70 or 80 years of age and would still like to ‘snowbird’

Some people even contemplate going south without medical coverage. Well this last season we have had several occasions to be involved with people regarding medical travel insurances and the resultant findings of this cursory investigation are based on an old wives tale “An ounce of Prevention is worth a Pound of Cure”.  In this economic climate there are costs when travelling that should always be included, and one is having adequate traveling medical coverage.

That sure sounded like a sermon, but it’s not meant to be.  But it was a wake up call for double checking your travel medical coverage.

Two prime points to be considered are: -

1/ Make certain that the date you leave the country is indeed the start date on your medical travel plan.  If you leave before that date, you may not be covered for your entire trip.  So make sure to notify your insurance broker if you have any change of departure dates prior to leaving the country and

2/ Determine your type of coverage, some policies do not allow you to renew while in another country, for example, a 30 day annual policy requires you to return to your home province for a set time for it to ‘renew’.  One traveler was phoning in for additional 30 day policies while out of country instead of going annual, and the broker obligingly accepted his money until he needed to act on his policy and coverage was invalidated:-.A very expensive lesson to be learned.

We hope that you had a safe trip back home to our Island Paradise and that sun,  blooming flowers, green lawns and fresh clear air are helping you transition from the south to the north.  Your executive is going to be getting together within the next month to work out details of our Chapter Rally, so stay tuned.

Cheers,

March 2009

WELCOME BACK!!  It seems like eons have passed since your eyes have focused on the writings of this author.  Time has a way of being a long time to the future, short time in the present, and quickly becoming a memory of the past.  What do these ramblings mean to you?  Well, to me, it’s great to see the Newmar publication, the Konnection, back on the circulation trail again. It seems such a long time, since the last issue and now we eagerly look forward to the long awaited issues of the new Konnection.  The Konnection is aptly named as it brings together, as a link or a konnection, the members of the Newmar Kountry Klub and their extended family all across Canada and the USA .   The web site hosted by Newmar was a great stop gap for communication, but the hard copy version will never be fully replaced by the digital technology.  An example of that is the current development in the high tech realm of digits, a ‘tablet’, the size and shape of either a pocket book or a hard cover book, which allows you to read a document page by page and looking like the old paper document.  It has an extremely low current drain and the ability to take it with you to read in sunlight or shade.  They are trying to duplicate, electronically, the tried and true ‘paper copy’ way of communicating.  In the meantime, it’s great to see you back, going through the pages, checking out the articles, reading what’s happening in your chapters, and where to schedule your next set of journeys based on the other chapter rally venues across our much traveled land.

So what has been happening since we last cast our eyes on the writings on these pages?  Well, after chatting with a lot of you, visiting per chance in stores, RV campsites and on the road, it seems that life, and most everyone’s RV lifestyle is still meting out the dreams and desires to visit familiar haunts, see new places, and make new friends and memories.  On our latest ‘Snowbird’ journey, it seems that the current USA economic situation is a popular topic of conversation listed right up there next to the latest ‘Doonfingle Deluxe” gadget for your coach.  The price of gas and diesel down south has taken an enjoyable drop at the pumps which is offsetting the not so enjoyable drop in the Canadian Loonie.  So all in all, the winter has been living up to most of its expectations of warmth, sunshine, camaraderie and now the memories of a ‘frozen winter’ north of the 49th. The frigid Canadian winter is now waning, as we face a new season of lawn cutting, flowers, and the darling buds of May.  Of course linking ourselves together are the fabulous rallies of the BC Dogwood Chapters coming up this September.

So, again, welcome back readers, and we look forward to getting in touch with you in the near future to once again unite our Islanders and enjoy our Klub and the treasures that our tropical island paradise has to offer all those who visit.

Cheers for now and keep those RV’s polished and ready to go on your summer sojourns.

October 2008

Summer is officially over with the first drops of rain that cleaned off the windshield as we pulled into the driveway after the closing of our very successful BC Dogwood – Islanders Klub rally:- Kudos to our Rally Chairperson, Gary Giles, and our hosts Lynn and Ian Vantreight for a very successful and memorable rally.  Even though we’ve had a lovely September, some of the crops in the fields are aiming their heads to the skies hoping for a few more weeks of warm weather to catch up with their growing for harvesting.  So now most of the Newmar coaches also have their heads up, hoping for a fall cleaning and preparation for another trip south to extend the warmth, especially for their owners sitting inside.  It should be an interesting fall and winter coming up with the US economy being as it is. Not to mention the price of gas and diesel causing some second thoughts about how far to follow that yellow line down the road.  However the magnetic draw that attracts a lot of us is stronger than the economy and the roar of diesel and gas engines will once again herald a ‘snowbird’ season heading south.

A wise man once said (always wonder who these ‘wise men’ are) life is a journey that comes with no plans or preconceived deluxe tour packages and no rebates.  So we have to formulate our own plan and tour in life and one of the best ways is doing what we love to do, and that is owning a Newmar and hitting the roads, exploring our vast and wonderful country, on both sides of the border and enjoying life to the fullest while we can.

At our AGM this past month, a new executive was sworn in, and I’d like to take a moment and thank the former executive for their time and effort in helping the BC Dogwood-Islanders Klub become the successful klub that it is. So a big thank you to Lyman and Charlene Robinson for their role as Vice-Presidents, and Doug and Vera Martin for their devoted time as Secretary/Treasurer.  It is with great sadness that we also have to report that Doug recently passed away at home.

To welcome in a new year for the klub on behalf of the Islanders, I’d like to acknowledge the incoming executive that have the vision to carry on the traditions of the Klub and move us on into 2009. – Secretary/Treasurer: - Bob and Sandy Smith. Vice President: - Gary Tennent.  Serving another term as President: - Anne and Graham Caines (until a new president can be found).

It is now time to close this article and get on with the planning for another successful ‘snowbird’ season, and we offer one and all a safe, uneventful, and enjoyable journey south, and for those ‘holding down the fort’ back here at home, have a great fall and enjoy the season as it bathes us all with sunshine, cooler nights, and the distinctive feel of coziness in the evenings curled up with a good book by the fireplace.

Cheers,

What does summer and a Newmar RV have in common?  Also what does winter and a Newmar RV have in common?  As a matter of fact what does any season and a Newmar RV have in common? – The answer: - the quest for good times, travelling to distant horizons, relaxing under an awning watching Mother Nature work on sunsets, whispering winds, and winding streams cascading down from snowcapped mountains.  I was asked recently why we enjoy travelling by RV instead of flying or moteling to different vacation destinations.  Our answer was that getting there was a big satisfactory part of the going somewhere equation, and exploring the whole experience of travelling, stopping by interesting spots for lunch or finding an idealic spot to spend a few days as you have your ‘home’ with you.  The ability to just ‘pull over’ and have everything you need at your fingertips whenever you wish is one of the most relaxing and rewarding parts of RV travelling as well as the camaraderie of getting together and meeting like minded travellers.  And of course not having to put up with long delays at airports, increasing surcharges for flying, putting up with cramped quarters for hours, the increasing costs of hotels, and restaurant food are all deciding factors in favour of RV’ing.

The seasons are moving along rather rapidly it seems these days, and making deadline decisions of where to go and when are rapidly approaching.  This is the season that fully embodies summer at it’s grandest, where hard work and tight schedules take a back seat to climbing aboard your RV and ‘hitting the road’ to visit friends and family or just getting away from it all.  So make those arrangements and while at it include those Newmar Rallies that happen this time of year.  Don’t forget that the BC Dogwood Chapter Rallies are soon approaching in September, and preparations are well underway for another season of excellent, fun filled, local Chapter Rallies. So look for those invitations to sign up for those rallies and get them into your Rally Chairperson, who is counting on you to be an important part in attending these rallies.  If you haven’t received your rally invitation package for the BC Dogwood Islanders Chapter Rally soon, contact Gary Giles at Solarplus@lincsat.com, he will be more than happy to get the information to you and look forward to seeing you at our annual rally.

At the conclusion of our rally there will be again, the annual AGM meeting where members will have the opportunity to discuss and vote on various issues that will shape the future of our Klub, including the election of our Klubs executives that will be running for office for 2009.  See you there.
