February State Director's Message

Hi all from sunny, warm Florida. The monthly luncheons continue in Lakeland at Golden Corral. The attendance is good and enjoyed by all. We also have attended a rally with each of the four chapters in Florida. It’s really good to see that all know how to have food, fun and fellowship (not necessarily in that order).

By the time you read this the Tampa Super Show will be history. We already have more attendance registered than last year. Hope all had a Merry Christmas and are looking forward to the New Year. Let’s pray this year will be better than last.

October State Director's Message

Hello everyone!

Well summer is over and we have dodged the hurricane here in Florida. Glad to hear that most everyone is enjoying good health and ready to start our Rally Season. Overall we had a very safe and uneventful trip. Heard of some roadside problems (our transmission went out 20 miles from my brother’s house, but we were able to limp in and get repairs) but like us, we know your spirits were not dampened by any of those events.

Hope Irene did not destroy any of the gorgeous scenery that we saw along our way north. Looks like the Sandpipers are kicking off our season, holding their first rally September 9-11 in Florala, Alabama.

With four Florida chapters there are plenty of opportunities to join in with us for the fun. Even if you cannot attend a rally, just come by and have lunch in Lakeland or Fort Myers (check the event calendar for dates and locations in the Konnection.

FLORIDA PELICANS

FEBRUARY PELICANS MESSAGE....

As the new President of the Florida Pelicans, this is my first time writing the article for the Kountry Klub Konnection magazine. Let me take this opportunity to introduce the officers of the Florida Pelicans for 2012.
Secretary/Treasurer - Cathy Queen
Vice-President - Cheryl Black
President - Dean Hartman
We have a great year of activities planned for this 2011/2012 season of the Florida Pelicans. We already have had, back in November, our season opening Welcome Back Rally at Cypress Woods RV Resort in Fort Myers, Florida. This event was a great homecoming, hosted by Bea & Andy Hamor and Sally & Neil O’Reilly and was a HUGE success with many great activities. Thanks also to North Trail RV for their rally support as well. Our appreciation goes out to the Hamors & O’Reillys for a job well done.
On December 2nd, our annual Christmas Luncheon was hosted by Connie Buchholz & Carol Hussey at the St. Charles Yacht Club. The event was outstanding with great food, excellent entertainment and our traditional Chinese auction/gift exchange. Thank you, Connie & Carol for a memorable event.
Our usual January Rally was held at Lazy Days/Rally Park in Seffner, Florida January 8 - 12 with 10 Coaches in attendance. This year our Rally hosts, Cathy & Richard Queen had some new and exciting activities as well as a few surprises for our Rally attendees. The event began with dinner and a walking tour of historic Ybor City. One of the highlights of this rally was the dinner & P J Party at Rally Celebration Hall. Much fun was had by all and we offer our thanks to Cathy & Richard for an enjoyable event.
Before we all leave Florida for the North, the following are the remaining up-coming events of fun & fellowship for this season:
Feb. 15th - A day outing at the Everblades Hockey Arena
Hosted by Marge & George Hawes
Mar. 5 - 9 - Annual Strawberry Festival Rally
Hosted by Cheryl & Bob Black
*
Apr. 29th -Annual Depart Florida Party
Hosted by Jim & Sheryl Overman and Fred & Marlies Rump

Blessings, till we meet again,
Dean Hartman (16204)
President

 OCTOBER PELICANS MESSAGE....

The summer has certainly gone quickly! We hope everyone has enjoyed their travels, whether sightseeing, visiting family or friends or just going from point A to point B. Funny how most of the Pelicans migrate North, West or East for cooler weather when Florida has had some of the coolest weather this summer! By the time you read this many of us will be back “home” in Florida and starting our normal routines again.

I’m sure many of you enjoyed the Newmar International Rally in June and are planning on the Region 5 Rally coming up soon. These are great rallies to attend and meet other Kountry Klub members. A large number of people put many hours and much energy into organizing and planning these large events. Show your appreciation and support by attending, if you can.

It is always great to get together after returning from our summer travels. For the Pelicans that will be our Welcome Back Rally at Cypress Woods RV Resort in Fort Myers, FL. Arrival is November 10, 2011 with departure November 15, 2011. This is always our best attended rally of the season and a great time to get caught up with everyone. Neal & Sally O’Reilly and Andy & Bea Hamor will be hosting, with help from Roger & Emily Mercier. Please refer to the calendar of events in the back of this magazine for contact information. If you are a NEW Florida Pelican during these last few months, I encourage you to attend this rally so you can meet the rest of the flock and let us take you under our wings!

Until next month, safe travels.

President

FLORIDA MANATEES

February Florida Manatees Chapter Message

Happy Valentines Day! Hope everyone will remember their sweetheart and shower them with love. Also find time to share that love for our returning veterans and their families.

As I write this before Christmas, I hope that all have recovered from Thanksgiving and enjoyed their Christmas with family and friends. We will spend it with our son and his family in Illinois.

I thought that my time writing an article for the Konnection was over. However, I was again elected as the President of the Florida Manatees and have a great cadre of officers to support me. Fletcher Swezey continues as the Vice-President, Karen Burnette as the Secretary and Beverly Englar as our Treasurer. Laura Bauer continues as our Sunshine Lady. It takes volunteers to make any organization function and I feel that the Manatees will be served well by these volunteers. A thanks again to all you who serve and volunteer to host rallies.

Our rally season began in November at Tropical Palms in Kissimmee. December had us at International RV Park in Daytona Beach. Both rallies were well attended and of course we ate great food. We canceled our New Years Eve rally as many of our members had prior commitments and we could not meet the minimum numbers we needed for the rates and space needed. I hope that many will attend the NKK Rally at the Tampa RV Super Show in place of this rally.

Our February rally will be at Crystal Isles RV Park in Crystal River where we will celebrate Valentines Day. The details are still being worked on but check your email or call for more info. We welcome any and all members wintering in Florida to join us.

It is again time to begin planning our summer travels. Please consider making the International Rally in Gillette, WY a stop on your summer travels. The info is listed in this Konnection so join us for a fun time with your Kountry Klub friends.

Until next time, join your NKK members at an area rally. Remember our service members as they return home.

Clyde and Roselind Rosten, 12126
Presidents

October Florida Manatees Chapter Message

Ruth and I hope that everyone is enjoying the great Summer we are having. We are still in Maine at our Summer Home, and have not had much opportunity to use our M/H. Also, for all of our friends who are still traveling around the Country, we hope that you are having great weather, no problems, and will return to Florida fully relaxed and ready to resume Chapter functions, wherever they may be.  We had the pleasure of having Beverly & George Englar stay in our back yard with their M/H for 7-8 days, and enjoyed showing them a lot of Maine while they were here. We made sure that they got their fill of "LOBSTA"!

On that note, we wish to tell all that Ruth and I will not be able to continue as Presidents of the Manatees after the first of the year, I personally have had some health issues this Summer, and have spent much time keeping several Doctors in business !! However, we will be back in Port Richey by the end of October, God willing - and the Creek don't rise too high!

We sincerely hope that one of our great members will step forward, and become President at the beginning of the year. It is not a large job, and does give the Officer holder a lot of satisfaction. You all know, as we did, that the members are VERY supportive of the Officers, and help when asked. - and you also know that the hardest job in the Chapter, is finding Rally sites, and making the plans for the year. - AND we are all aware of the GREAT job Fletcher and his Connie do in filling this position.

We have been favored with so much help this year, and want to thank all of the members for their support.

Also, we would be remiss if we did not say how much we appreciate all of the work that Beverly Englar has done over the years, to keep us all in line and up to date with her great Secretaries Reports.

We certainly do hope to continue attending all of the Rallys, and look forward to seeing all again.

Until next Month, please keep safe, and God Bless.

Bill & Ruth Crane (5864 L)
Presidents

FLORIDA SEA TURTLES

FEBUARY FLORIDA SEA TURTLES CHAPTER MESSAGE

Hi everyone,
It is late December as I write this. The November and December Sea Turtles rallies are history. We’ve got some really creative members. Both these rallies were held in locations the chapter had never been to and had activities members had never done.

Our November rally was at Williston Crossings RV Resort. This is a very nice resort with all paved and full hookup sites. The rally was hosted by Jerri and Bob Connelly and co-hosted by Mimi and Paul Poore.

Something special happened at this rally, with these two couples. They both qualified for the NKK Host Rally Bar with the number 5 insignia in the center! Wow, how many times does this happen? They were presented these very special rally bars at the December rally.

At the November rally we were blessed with participation of Winnie & Jim Guerdon and Ursula & Paul Suddard. Past members are always welcome at Sea Turtle rallies. Betty & Carl Stevens also joined the festivities as guests of Mimi & Paul Poore. Rally entertainment was unique. Street golf is a game I had never played. It very quickly became apparent that a golf ball will roll a very long way on blacktop/concrete surfaces! I do mean a very long way. The chapter Secretary, Nancy Miller had a hole in one! This was achieved on a blind hole. Nancy was looking for her ball and couldn’t find it. By golly, it was found in the hole! Congratulations Nancy.

The chapter had a tour of Two Tails Ranch. This is a place for elephants. Retirement, rehabilitate or temporary place to stay this is the place, if you’re an elephant. The owner, Patricia Zerbini, provided us with an excellent demonstration of elephant intelligence, behaviors and humor. Yea, elephants do have a sense of humor.

Our athletic activities had prizes for first place. Ken Greenwood took overall first place by winning two prizes. There was an interesting development during the horse shoe and shuffle board events. Due to the skill being demonstrated, the scoring was changed (in the middle of a game) so the event would finish before sundown! If one thinks the Sea Turtles are an informal and fun chapter, this surely proves it. Just so we remain balanced, in the final round of horse shoes, John & Paul skunked Bob & Gary 11/0. The competitive spirit is still alive. The rally was blessed with excellent weather, outstanding food and most importantly the renewal and continuation of friendships. A full complement of officers was nominated for their respective offices. Elections will be held at the December rally. Congratulations Jerri, Bob, Mimi and Paul on an outstanding welcome back rally

The December rally was held at Highlands Hammock State Park. Our hosts were Nancy & Kent Miller. Co- Hosts were Paul & Mimi Poore. Nancy and Kent were presented with their Rally Host rally bars. This is the first rally they have hosted! Imagine that, the chapter VP who organizes the rallies and lines up the hosts had never hosted a rally! This reminds me of the contents of John Sammut’s speech at the International Rally. Until John went on the Newmar executive tour, he had never lived in a motor coach. There is a similarity here. Both gentlemen are VPs. The rally started with a welcome social and pizza dinner under the stars. Yep, the hosts decided it was time to actually use our awnings, chairs and all that outdoor stuff we carry with us. Breakfasts, socials, etc were held outside. This turned out to be an excellent choice.

The campground has many, many, squirrels. The first night there was a thud, thud on the coach roof. This was followed by a scurrying noise and then silence. Rising to the occasion I went outside to check and saw nothing. The following morning, I checked the roof and saw nothing. All I can think of is that one of those very overweight squirrels fell out of its’ nest and landed on the coach roof.

A visit to Heartland Horses Handicapped was one of our activities. This is a non-profit organization that uses horses to provide handicap individuals an adventure of their own. Attendees saw how individuals look forward to riding the horses or the buggy pulled by horse power. This is a worthwhile venture and if you’re in the area, consider visiting the facility. The chapter also visited the City of Lake Placid, Florida. We had a presentation by the founders of the Mural Society. Lake Placid has about 43 murals painted on the side of different buildings throughout the city. Hidden inside the murals are items for visitors to find. This turned out to be an outstanding afternoon. Nice stroll, beautiful murals and an excellent restaurant for lunch. This is a great way to spend the day.

The chapter also had a private tour of Highlands Hammock State Park. The ranger leading the tour (via our own private tram) knew all about the park. She has hiked almost all the park and knows where all the interesting flora and fauna can be found. Quite a variety makes their home in this state park.

Around the camp fire the main topic of conversation were the adventures of the summer trips. Bob & Jerri Connelly took the best tale by letting us know they could not get their coach out of Park for several days. Now we all know how, by routine, we automatically put the vehicle into Park. The fix turned out to be simple and easy, but the adventures of getting the coach out of Park (until it was repaired) were reminiscent of a Lucille Ball comedy show. The Poore’s were close behind with a Hydro Hot hose bursting 3 times! They had to reroute their summer trip through Elkhart for a permanent repair.

The Sea Turtles go where we have never gone and do what we have never done (Captain Kirk would be proud of us). If you’d like to attend a Sea Turtle rally contact me for the latest information. Our February rally will be at Torrey Oaks RV Resort in Bowling Green, Florida. The March rally will be at Upriver Campground in North Ft. Myers, Florida.

OCTOBER FLORIDA SEA TURTLES CHAPTER MESSAGE

Hi everyone,
I really hope all is well and your summer travels are a success. It is late August as I write this. We have completed our summer trip with the Gkids. While everyone had a good time and returned safely, the trip did have a tragedy. As we pulled into the ST. Mary, MT KOA I was immediately informed (by the 3 Gkids) that we had no cell service. This meant a week of no texting, voice or other communications! This also meant a week of uninterrupted adventure at Glacier National Park! The KOA WIFI was useless and I refused to turn on my Internet hot spot (which did have service). When all was said and done the week had passed and the Gkids had a wonderful time (yea, they admitted it). On our hikes, we were able to see a juvenile black bear (about 20 feet away), a grizzly bear (about 100 feet away) yikes, big horn sheep and countless other animals. This is a picture (see Konnection article) of a grizzly bear cooling off on a snow bank. The picture does not do justice to the size of the bear. When there is nothing between the bear and you, they really look large.

As we climbed out of the valley St. Mary is in, I immediately heard vigorous thumb typing. It seems the Gkids may really believe their world can not get along without their guidance every hour or so.

For those of you who drive the coach, this picture is a scary sight (see picture in Konnection article).

Attend the November Sea Turtle rally and find out where we encountered a 23% downhill grade. The body of water, in the background, could be a hint. Send me your answers via email. Be the first to guess and you could be a winner. I do not have a prize, but you could still claim being first.

Mimi, Paul, Jerrie and Bob have been traveling, up north, together for part of the summer. I haven’t heard from them lately. Assuming all is well, it would be great if they could have pictures of their adventure for our November rally. Maybe a picture of a Polar Bear can top my picture of a Grizzly Bear.

Speaking of the November rally, it will be at Williston Crossing RV Resort, Williston, Florida. The dates are November 7 through 11. This is the Fall Season Starter Festival rally. Please call the campground (800-615-5774) and make your reservation. Mention you are with the Sea Turtle rally. Everyone should have received an email with the rally information. If you have not, please let me know, via email. The Poore’s and Connelly’s will be hosting. They are experienced rally hosts. For me, I look forward to attending this rally.

At the November rally maybe we can revive what we all remember was our first assignment when returning to school. Letting everyone know what we did last summer.

Continue your safe travels. See you soon.

Gary Doolittle
17178L
President, Sea Turtles Chapter
