Welcome to Newmar Kountry Klub
Please scroll down to read my latest update and my report from the November Klub Board meeting

Welcome to the Newmar Kountry Klub “Member-at-Large” web page!  The Klub Member-at-Large is elected by the membership to serve as your representative on the Klub’s Board of Directors – in other words, to serve as sort of an Ombudsman to assure that your voice is heard at the Klub’s highest leadership levels.  In my particular case, I was appointed to complete the term of Jeannie Fallen, who tragically and unexpectedly passed away earlier this year.

We all know the RV industry and RV clubs in general are facing some serious challenges in the months and years ahead.  Newmar and the Kountry Klub are obviously facing those challenges as well.  Of one thing we can be pretty certain -- we will all be making some changes if we wish to continue enjoying this lifestyle we have come to know and love.

The Member-at-Large section of the Klub website is an attempt to meet one of those challenges – “How do we make sure our members voices are heard, recognizing that our costs are increasing and we will most likely be traveling less than we would like.”  As great as it would be to meet and talk with every one of you in person, we will need to be creative to gather your input.

Here’s how I see this working:  Obviously, I want to hear from you!  I’ve set up a special email address,
M-A-L@hagedon.net for your questions, comments and concerns.  At least twice a month – more often if we have fresh info – I plan to update these pages.  We'll put the most recent posts on this page and then periodically take the older posts off and put them on the M-A-L Articles Page.

If your questions or comments are of a specific nature, I will respond to them directly.  If your input is of a more general nature, and with your permission, I will post it here.  Of course, your phone calls are always welcome and I can be reached on my cell phone almost any time at 520-603-1190.

Please remember, this is intended to be YOUR section of the Klub website.  Within reason, you will determine what we discuss here and how these pages look.  This is somewhat of an experiment, but I think it will be fun and am looking forward to working with you so that the site continues to evolve and grow.

Now, it’s your turn.  I’m looking forward to hearing from you!

Hello 2009!
Posted 1/04/09

Or maybe some of us would rather say “Goodbye 2008!”

Last year certainly presented us with our share of challenges and I can’t say that I’m sorry to see it go. But then, there were many good times, too.  Personally, Sue and I had a lot of opportunities to attend Klub rallies and meet a lot of new Klub members.  We attended an excellent rally at the Tampa Super Show last January and participated in a wonderful International Rally in DuQuoin.  Then, in October, we had an opportunity to host the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta Special Event rally, which really turned out to be a lot of fun.

The common element in all of these events, of course, has been the people – our Klub members – who made 2008 a memorable year in a positive way.   And regardless of the economy or any of the other challenges thrown at us, it will be our members, getting together at rallies, special events, luncheons and other activities who will make 2009 a great year as well.

One of the things we will remember from 2008, especially from a Klub standpoint, is having to do more with less.  There are so many folks who pitched in to help the Klub that I can’t possibly name them all, but certainly Barney, Barbara, Vicky and Linda in the office, and the Regional Directors have worked very hard to adjust to these difficult times.  We all owe them our gratitude for their efforts.

Realistically, 2009 is going to start out to be at least as tough for Newmar and the Klub as 2008.  But there are definitely some bright spots.  Our rally calendar is filling up.  I’ve taken on the responsibility of posting the calendar updates on the NKK Master Calendar, and I typically get two or three new entries a week.  Please be sure to check the calendar on a regular basis, as it is continuing to grow.

The website is continuing to develop.  More and more of the States and Chapters are posting updates on their activities and, because these are published within days of when they are written, they contain very timely information.   And if you have photos or information pertaining to Klub activities that you would like to see posted on the website, by all means send them along to your State or Regional Directors.  Unlike a printed publication, we have plenty of room to put your information out for all to see.

What can you do to help?  Obviously, we need you as members.  Please help the Klub remain a viable, dynamic organization by keeping your membership active.   As Barney and Barbara said in their latest update, we have what we think is a good plan to keep the Klub moving forward, but that plan depends on your membership..  If you haven’t done so already, you can renew your membership on-line by clicking here.

You can also help out by attending rallies and Special Events in 2009.  After all, that is what we are all about!  As you well know, our Klub events come in all sizes, shapes and flavors, so there have to be at least a few events that will appeal to you.  Fuel prices are down now as well, but regardless of what happens to fuel costs, there are sure to be some activities near you.  Plan to attend at least one rally this year that you haven’t attended in the past and make some new Newmar friends.

Another way to help is by making sure as many Klub members as possible know about all the changes taking place on the website.  Please help us “spread the word” as you attend our various events.  If you can, take your laptop computer to an event and offer to provide a “tour” of the website.   I’ve tried that on a couple of occasions and many of our folks seemed to find it very worthwhile.

In any event, I’m looking forward to 2009, and to working with each and every one of you to help the Klub continuously improve.  As always, I’d really like to hear from you, get your thoughts, ideas and concerns and use them to help make the Klub even better than it is today.  My email address is m-a-l@hagedon.net and telephone number is 520-603-1190.

Happy New Year!!

Thoughts From The Board Meeting . . .
Posted 11/18/08

On Friday, November 14, I attended my first Newmar Kountry Klub Board of Directors's meeting as your new Member-at-Large. While I would much rather have been there in person, I was able to participate by teleconference from our RV at a Klub rally in Benson, Arizona, using Skype, an Internet-based video phone service.  Given our current economic situation, it didn't seem to make a lot of sense to spend the money on travel and, all things considered, it worked pretty well.

Barney and Barbara Barnett, in their roles as International Directors, have an in-depth report from the meeting on the Newmar Kountry Klub home page, but I wanted to give you some general impressions and also fill you in on my report to the board:

My overall impression is that we have a Board that is very much committed to the ongoing viability of the Klub.  Because we are heavily dependent on an annual subsidy from Newmar Corporation, our Board consists of four voting members from Newmar -- Matt Miller, Dick Parks, Gary Shuder, and Kevin Bogan.  As we all know, Newmar and the entire RV industry is dealing with serious survival issues of their own right now.

These Newmar executives are clearly focused on keeping the company in business and that is important to us as Klub members for obvious reasons.  It would be hard to see the Klub in anything like its current form without the support of Newmar.  What they have asked of us is to do everything we can to control spending and the need to continue in this mode is not likely to change for a while.

It's a simple fact that every dollar that Newmar spends to support Klub operations is money that will not be available to help run the business.  From my perspective, I want to make sure the Klub is doing everything possible to help Newmar and, ultimately the Klub, survive and prosper.

Over the past couple of months, Sue and I have attended a half-dozen Klub rallies, including the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta Special Event, which we hosted.  In the process, I met with over 300 Klub members to get their input and ideas to take forward to the Board.  I've also talked with several members on the phone and have had a few email contacts as well.  Overall, I've been in touch with members from thirteen states, two provinces and seven regions.

The overwhelming majority of the folks I spoke with are very concerned about the challenges facing the Klub and Newmar and are very supportive concerning the actions being taken to keep the Klub and Newmar as viable organizations.  Not surprisingly, the number one issue is the changes being made in the publication of the Konnection

There are a significant number of our members who do not have access to the Internet.  They depend on the Konnection and other mailings to learn about upcoming rallies and special events and to stay informed as to what is going in their region, state and chapters.   More than a few folks have said that the Konnection is the main reason they belong to the Klub!

On the other hand, I heard from many of our members who want the Klub to move more quickly into electronic communications.  They are typically folks who use computers and the Internet extensively in their daily lives.  Many are full-timers or travel extensively.  Not surprisingly, these are "younger," newer members of the Klub.

Our challenge is to find a way to serve both groups, while at the same time cutting costs, and the board really wrestled with this problem.  It would be relatively easy to publish both an electronic and a print version of the Konnection, but, right now, we just can't afford to do it.  So we are going to do the best we can, with the resources we have available, and we ask you to bear with us.

Barney and Barbara have covered our plans in the article on their web page.  At this point, we believe this will get the most critical information out in a print "newsletter" that will be mailed to those who are not on the Internet.  Postage is a big expense and getting bigger, so PLEASE make sure the Klub office has a current email address for you.  And remember, the most current, up-to-date information on the Klub and our activities will appear on the Klub website.

One of the other areas that concerned a number of members was changing the date and location of this year's International Rally.  There were several reasons for moving the rally, but the primary one was to reduce the cost of supporting the event.  Having the rally in Goshen greatly reduces travel expense for the Klub staff and Newmar support and service techs.

Scheduling a rally as large as ours usually requires several years of advance planning, so moving the 2009 event on short notice required us to find a date that was available.  In fact, we were lucky to get a date at Goshen with so little advance planning.  In short, is this something we wanted to do?  No.  Is it something we had to do?  Yes.

I believe the Board is working hard to keep the Klub viable and focused on meeting the needs of our members.  I am proud to be a Board member and will continue to work hard to represent your interests.  The only way I can do that is if I hear from you.  Please continue to pass along your thoughts, ideas and concerns and I will do my best to address them.  Thanks for hanging in there with us!

Klub Rallies Are Good For You!
Posted 11/05/08

It sort of dawned on me as I was assembling the photos for the photo attendee pages that were passed out to our NKK’ers attending the Arizona State Rally recently.  I volunteered to take pictures of the couples attending the rally and then assemble them on to pages, so that the attendees could put faces with names after the rally.  Apparently, I’m not the only one whose memory is failing!

The thing that struck me is that all of the people in these pictures looked genuinely happy!  In most cases, I only took one photo.  There was no real “posing.”  I just clicked the shutter and ended up with 28 couples who appeared to be having a really good time!

So I went back and looked at similar pages from past rallies.  I’m not sure where this idea of doing photo pages started, but we’ve assembled about 20 such pages from various rallies over the years, and all of the folks in these pictures are either happy, or doing a darned good job of faking it

.

And my point?  Attend a rally.  It will make you feel good!   And there are a lot of medical studies that say happy people are healthier and live longer.

As we head into the winter season, a lot of folks are settling in, either at home in the northern climes, or at their southern refuges from winter weather.  And from the discussions we have had recently with many of these Klub members, they are beginning to plan their travel activities for 2009.

That’s also a good thing, and it reflects some pretty positive thinking, given what we have all been hit with in the past year.  If you haven’t taken a look at the Klub calendar lately, now is a good time to check it out.  We’ve been adding information to the calendar on the average of a couple of times a week, and there are already a lot of events to choose from.

And don’t forget to include the International Rally in Goshen and a Special Event or two in your plans.  Sue and I intend to make as many rallies as possible during the coming year and we would love to meet up with as many of you as we can.

We’re really looking forward to 2009 and hope you are, too.

Feedback . . .

Sue and I have been able to meet and talk with well over 200 Klub members from many parts of the country recently as we have attended rallies and hosted the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta Special Event.  I’ve been able to ask questions and discuss Klub issues in-person with these folks and what I am learning will become part of my report to the NKK Board of Directors at our meeting in November.  By the way, I’ll be attending the meeting by teleconference, rather than incurring travel expenses, to help the Klub keep our costs down.

Some of what I’ve learned has already had an impact on Klub operations.  We have been continually working on improving communications with our members, the result being changes in the website, direct emails to all members with email addresses on file with the Klub and US Postal mailings to make sure we reach our members who don’t use computers.

Very soon we hope to have the Konnection magazine available on-line, in a form that can be printed out and read in paper form for those that prefer this format.  We also have a printable copy of the Rally Disclaimer form here, for those that prefer to mail in the form directly to the rally hosts for Region, State and Chapter rallies.

Speaking of rallies, I’m encouraged that the events we have attended have had good turnouts.  The rally organizers have seen some downturn, but, considering our recent economic turmoil and the big fuel price hit we took this summer, the folks I talked with seem pretty intent on continuing their RV lifestyle.

I’m also getting feedback from a few folks on-line . . . but not as much as I would have hoped.  I plan to put my report to the Board of Directors together in early November, and would surely like to include your thoughts, concerns and issues relative to Kountry Klub matters.

Please remember, however, that issues concerning your coach or ideas for Newmar product improvements or changes are best directed to Newmar Corporation.  Contact information is available on the Newmar website, www.newmarcorp.com. I’ll be glad to help facilitate this process if you need assistance getting to the right Newmar person, but I cannot and would not presume to speak on behalf of the company.

And finally, yet another plug for the Klub website, www.newmarkountryklub.com.  Since you are reading this, you are probably well aware of what the website has to offer.  You are probably already checking the “Calendar” and “News” sections regularly and know that these pages are getting updated as often as once or twice a week.  Also, the Regional Directors are doing a great job of updating their pages and you should check them regularly.

But you can also help by promoting the website with other NKK members as well.  There are many folks that I’ve talked with who don’t know what the site has to offer, or how to access it.  Please help us get the word out.

So . . How Are We Doing?
Posted 9/1/08

A bunch of us, including your Regional Directors, have been hard at work on the Klub website, with the goal being to make sure it provides timely, useful information for you -- our "customers."  We've been getting some feedback on what works and what needs "fixing," and that's great.  Some of the changes we've already made include new FullTimers and Member-at-Large sections and improvements to site navigation.  We're posting updates to the Calendar page on nearly a daily basis, and a number of Regions, States and Chapters are now submitting updates for the Region and State news pages.

if you haven't poked around the site lately, I encourage you to do so.  Every Region is taking their own approach as to how they provide information, so don't just check out one or two regions, and if you are a State or Chapter officer, please provide your Region Directors frequent updates on what's going on in your corner of the world.  Rest assured, they will be pleased to post your information on the website.

And please, please, give us your thoughts and comments as to what we can do to make the website more useful to you.  There's a good chance your ideas will find their way on to the NKK website and make it a better experience for all Klub members.

Teamwork . . .                                                                                                                Posted 8/21/08

One of the things that continues to impress me about the Klub is how well your leadership group is stepping up to the unprecedented challenges facing us.  Barney and Barbara deserve a great deal of credit for creating an environment that fosters teamwork.  To a couple, our Regional Directors are responding and really pulling together for the good of the Klub as never before.   Some examples:

  • The DuQuoin International Rally.  By almost any standard, this year’s event was a HUGE success!  It’s the volunteers, of course, that make this happen and when Barney and Barbara asked all the volunteers to stand during the Closing Ceremony, it became immediately obvious how true this is.

But with an event this large, and given that we were working with an extremely tight budget, things can and do go awry.  That’s where the Regional Directors really came through.  When a problem popped up, one of the Directors was always there to say “What can we do to help?”  There may have been a few times when some volunteers found themselves getting quickly re-assigned, but the “crisis” was averted and the job got done.

  • Becoming “Internet-Savvy.”  Love it or hate it, the Internet is here to stay.  Compared to other RV clubs, we were probably a bit behind in putting this technology to work for us.

Computers2s.jpgBut we are rapidly catching up!  Since you are reading this, you are probably well aware of the many website changes that have taken place and, if you haven’t already done so, I encourage you to “browse” around the site.  Most of this new look and functionality is due to the hard work of Philip Randolph, our “webmaster.”   If the site is to provide you with useful info, however, we will rely on your input, working with our Regional Directors and office staff to keep it fresh and updated.

    Computers1s.jpg
So, to get all the Directors up to speed on our new Internet  tools, we went back to “school” at the Directors Meeting in June.   With Philip as our instructor, we learned how to quickly and easily update our respective web pages.   While  I must admit I heard a few groans from the Directors as we kicked off the session, everybody quickly got involved and really seemed to be having fun.   And, just as at DuQuoin, we all pitched in to help each other.

There is an old saying, sometimes referred to as a curse, that goes, “May you be condemned to live in interesting times.”  Curse or not, we are definitely living in “interesting times.”  Personally, I can’t think of a better group of people to lead us.  Please continue to give Barney, Barbara, our Regional and State Directors and Chapter Officers and of course , Vicky and Ashley in the Klub office, your continued encouragement and support.  They’ve earned it!
